Police ID Woman, 20, One Killed In Early-Morning Shirlington Crash

Police say that a 20-year-old woman was killed in an early-morning Arlington crash after losing control and ping-ponging into a pole and trees on Tuesday morning.

Arlington resident Mayra Cruz-Arriaza has been identified by the police as the woman involved in the fatal crash shortly after 1:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21, in the 2500 block of South Arlington Mill Drive in Shirlington.

According to an Arlington County Police Department spokesperson, Cruz-Arriaza was driving west on Arlington Mill Drive when the vehicle left the roadway for unknown reasons, entered the median, and struck a pedestrian crosswalk pole before coming to rest at the base of two trees.

Cruz-Arriaza was found unresponsive by first responders on Monday morning when they arrived at the crash scene, officials said. She was rushed to an area hospital for treatment and evaluation of her injuries, where she was later pronounced dead on Tuesday.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
